What’s The Next State To Support Gay Marriage?

Michael Jones, writing at Change.org, says Maine is likely to be the next state to legalize same-sex marriage.

“Today’s leading candidate gets to be Maine, with advocates on both sides of the marriage issue gearing up for the next legislative session in January.  Equality Maine did an outstanding job on Election Day,organizing volunteers outside of 86 polling places to get more than 30,000 voters to sign a postcard saying they support marriage equality.  The Maine Civil Liberties Union has also hired a marriage organizer for the state, and is preparing to launch a new Web site dedicated to marriage equality in the Pine Tree State.”

Maine currently recognizes limited domestic partner benefits. Via Maine’s HHS:

“It is important to remember that a registered domestic partnership is NOT the same as a marriage and does not entitle partners to rights other than those for which the registry was intended. This registry is intended to allow individuals to have rights of inheritance as well as the rights to make decisions regarding disposal of their deceased partners remains.”
