Watch: Obama On Tonight Show Says ‘Rape Is Rape. It’s A Crime’

President Obama was Jay Leno‘s guest on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” Wednesday evening, and when asked about Richard Mourdoch‘s comments that children born of rape are “God intended,” President Obama responded clearly, “Rape is rape. It’s a crime.”

“These various distinctions about rape don’t make too much sense to me, don’t make any sense to me,” the President added, noting, “This is exactly why you don’t want a bunch of politicians, mostly male, making decisions about women’s healthcare.”

Obama reminded Leno that the winner of this election will likely choose several U.S. Supreme Court justices, and that’s why this election is critical.

“Women are capable of making these decisions” about abortion, the President said. “These are not just women’s issues, these are family issues,” Obama said, the much applause.

Mourdoch, who is the Republican Tea Party candidate from Indiana running for the U.S. Senate, has been the top story over the past 24 hours, after he said in his debate Tuesday night, “I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

Mourdock, who is running against Democrat U.S. Congressman Joe Donnelly, comes from the Paul Ryan, Todd Akin, Joe Walsh, Rick Santorum, Sharron Angle wing of the GOP that believes in abortion for zero percent of all cases — no abortion, no exception for rape, incest, life of the mother, health of the mother. Period.

On Monday, Mitt Romney endorsed Mourdoch and is refusing to pull the endorsement.
