The Obama campaign, and most of America, is tired of Mitt Romney‘s lies, and they’re finally calling him on it in a new ad refuting Romney’s auto industry lie:
When the auto industry faced collapse, Mitt Romney turned his back. Even the conservative Detroit News criticized Romney for his “wrong-headedness†on the bailout. And now, after Romney’s false claim of Jeep outsourcing to China, Chrysler itself has refuted Romney’s lie. The truth? Jeep is adding jobs in Ohio. Mitt Romney on Ohio jobs: Wrong then. Dishonest now.
Yesterday, as The New Civil Rights Movement reported, Romney has been falsely stating that Chrysler is shifting its production of Jeeps to China — and forcing Chrysler to label Romney’s lies as “extravagant comments,†and “unnecessary fantasies.â€
Both in his stump speeches and in a brazenly dishonest TV ad, Romney cites a Bloomberg article which Chrysler itself addressed on its website three days ago:
Let’s set the record straight: Jeep has no intention of shifting production of its Jeep models out of North America to China. It’s simply reviewing the opportunities to return Jeep output to China for the world’s largest auto market. U.S. Jeep assembly lines will continue to stay in operation. A careful and unbiased reading of the Bloomberg take would have saved unnecessary fantasies and extravagant comments.
Greg Sargent at The Washington Post notes that “the auto-bailout is a case where government action unambiguously worked. Given that it helped save an industry that’s directly linked to one in eight American jobs, it’s also a case where the true implications of Romney’s ideological hostility towards government intervention in the economy and his insistence on the magic of the unfettered free market can be dramatized in a way that connects with voters.”
