Watch: Married Catholic Republicans Against Banning Same-Sex Marriage

Minnesotans United for All Families, a coalition working to defeat a ballot initiative in Minnesota that will permanently ban same-sex marriage if approved in November, just released this ad featuring a married heterosexual Catholic Republican family who are against banning same-sex marriage, and talk about their relationship with a lesbian couple who had a little boy, and the fact that “in our daughter’s world, her normal is so much different than ours — [same-sex marriage] didn’t phase her at all.”

Minnesota Public Radio notes “the ad, which would eventually be broadcast statewide, was the first salvo in a multimillion dollar campaign to air the ‘vote no’ ad continually until the election.

“We decided that once we go up, we want to stay up,” Brickman said.

The principal campaign in support of the amendment, Minnesota for Marriage, will start broadcasting its TV ads Oct. 1.

The Minnesotans United for All Families ad features John and Kim Canny of Savage, a Minneapolis suburb. It identifies them as Catholics and Republicans, who have been married for 13 years and who have three children.

“Marriage is really important to me. I didn’t really think a lot about same sex marriage,” John Carny says. Kim Carny says a lesbian couple who live in their neighborhood with their adopted son “taught all of us in our little suburban world.”

Frankly, while I’m not from Minnesota, and my only grasp of the state is from the Mary Tyler Moore Show and Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion,” but I worry that “in our little suburban world” might be taken as a little condescending by some. I hope not.

The sad parts surrounding Minnesota’s marriage amendment is that even if it is not passed, there’s already a state law banning same-sex marriage. So, a huge battle with no net gain for equality supporters — unless you count educating the public, which is, of course a win.

Secondly, while polls show the majority of Minnesotans support same-sex marriage, polls also show the amendment passing, though by less of a margin than before.

Lots of work left to do.
