Last night, seven of the thirteen gay and lesbian GetEQUAL activists who were arrested yesterday after chaining themselves to the White House fence to force repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell†picketed and protested a meeting now (called “Common Purposeâ€) of LGBT and progressive organizations, including the heads of HRC, the NGLTF, and the Center for America Progress.
In attendance were Winnie Stachelberg (Center for American Progress), David Smith(HRC), and Rea Carey (the Task Force.) Oh, and Jim Messina, the White House Deputy Chief of Staff, who was the target of GetEQUAL’s anger as he walked into the door of the hotel which holds the regular Tuesday night meeting.
Screaming, “Jim Messina, what’s your plan?” GetEQUAL held signs stating, “There’s no common purpose without equality,†a play on the meeting’s moniker.
This marks two days in a row GetEQUAL has held civil disobedience actions to move political leaders towards repealing “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in this lame duck session of Congress.
