Watch: Catholic League’s Bill Donohue Demonstrates Why The Pope Had To Tell Him To Shut Up

We all know the head of the Catholic League, Bill Donohue, the man who has made a career out of homophobia and anti-Semitism. We all know Pope Francis I, the man who this week stunned the world by saying the Catholic Church must stop its “obsession” with gay people, abortion, and birth control, or face extinction.

CNN’s Chris Cuomo this morning invited Bill Donohue on his show to talk about the Pope’s message to Catholics around the world. Donohue, is, after all, one of the prime targets of the Pope’s direction.

“It is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time,” Pope Francis I said about homosexuality, same-sex marriage, abortion, and birth control. “We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods.”

We have to find a new balance; otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards,” the pontiff said, adding:

“A person once asked me, in a provocative manner, if I approved of homosexuality. I replied with another question: ‘Tell me: when God looks at a gay person, does he endorse the existence of this person with love, or reject and condemn this person?’ We must always consider the person.”

“This church with which we should be thinking is the home of all, not a small chapel that can hold only a small group of selected people. We must not reduce the bosom of the universal church to a nest protecting our mediocrity.”

Now, keep that in mind as we look at this amazing takedown of Bill Donohue, the man who is the sheer embodiment of what the Pope was preaching against.

Did he hear the Pope’s message?

Donohue tries to echo the Pope’s remarks, at first, and Cuomo amusingly says, “I feel like this may be the Pope’s first miracle, because to hear you saying these things it’s going to be very shocking, because it really sounds like you’re one of the people he’s sending this message to.”

Later in the nine-minute interview, Donohue reverses course and shows he hasn’t changed, and didn’t hear one word of what Francis I said.

“There’s nothing the pope said that should give relief to people who say all of a sudden now that conservatives should shut up,” Donahue said. “We’re not going to shut up because we’re in consonant compliance with what the Pope said.”

Later, Cuomo noted:

“Most infamously, recently, saying that the Church had a homosexual problem, not a pedophile problem … You’re saying you won’t do that anymore?”

Donohue said he would continue to “tell the truth.

Which is, of course, false.

If the Pope is supposed to be God’s messenger on earth, Donohue’s voicemail is full an not accepting any more messages.
