Wanda Sykes “Piss’d” At Chris Rock Over Tracy Morgan Anti-Gay Rant

Wanda Sykes, who Friday night on Twitter called Tracy Morgan a “dumb comic” who would not have been “so ignorant in LA,” responded to a tweet from fellow comedian Chris Rock which supported Tracy Morgan, by saying she was “piss’d.”

“I dont know about you, but I dont want to live in world where Tracy Morgan cant say foul inappropriate shit,” Chris Rock said via Twitter.

Sykes, an African-American, a lesbian, and a comedian, tweeted, “Ok, piss’d reading, “I don’t want 2 live n a world where Tracy can’t say…” I Do! U Keep the world, just break me off an evolved country,” but did not mention Chris Rock by name.

Sykes has been actively involved in supporting the LGBT community after coming out in 2008 in the wake of the Prop 8 same-sex marriage ban, being honored by GLAAD and recording a PSA for thinkb4youspeak.com, GLSEN, and the Ad Council, to raise awareness of people who use the word “gay” to mean “bad,” or “wrong.” “That’s So Gay” ran on nationwide TV in 2009.

Chris Rock has often been criticized for his use of the “n” word, and publicly has stated his dislike for the idea of having to be a role model. In his 1997 memoir, Rock wrote, “Why does the public expect entertainers to behave better than everybody else? It’s ridiculous…Of course, this is just for black entertainers. You don’t see anyone telling Jerry Seinfeld he’s a good role model. Because everyone expects whites to behave themselves…Nowadays, you’ve got to be an entertainer and a leader. It’s too much.”

Obviously, Sykes disagrees. Rightly so.

So does GLAAD, who responded to Chris Rock’s tweet via Twitter, saying, “Language about stabbing kids for being gay isn’t ‘foul.’ It’s dangerous.”

Exactly. Words matter.
