Updated: Vigil For Murdered Harlem Transgender Woman Islan Nettles Is Tuesday Evening

A vigil for Islan Nettles, the murdered transgender woman who died Thursday after being on life support for almost five days, will be held Tuesday in Harlem, one block from where she was beaten. On Saturday, August 17, Nettles and a friend were walking in front of a New York City police station when several men approached them. Once the men learned the women were transgender, they physically and verbally attacked, with homophobic slurs and firsts.

Harlem Pride announced the vigil will be held at 6:00 PM EDT tomorrow, Tuesday, Augurst 27, at Jackie Robinson Park. The entrance is on West 148th Street at Bradhurst Avenue.

“Please keep in mind that this is a celebration of Islan Nettles, her love of life and an opportunity for the community to come together in unity and peace,” the group notes.

Nettles had written this on a LinkedIn profile:

“Creative, energetic, determined, social, positive and anti-violence are some words to describe myself.”
