Updated: George Zimmerman Making Money Off Trayvon Martin Killing

George Zimmerman, the man who killed 17-year old Skittles-armed Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida, has set up a website designed to make money — accepting PayPal donations as the only official site — for the living and legal expenses of George Zimmerman.

“I am the real George Zimmerman,” the entry-level, technically-deficient website reads:

On Sunday February 26th, I was involved in a life altering event which led me to become the subject of intense media coverage. As a result of the incident and subsequent media coverage, I have been forced to leave my home, my school, my employer, my family and ultimately, my entire life. This website’s sole purpose is to ensure my supporters they are receiving my full attention without any intermediaries.

It has come to my attention that some persons and/or entities have been collecting funds, thinly veiled as my “Defense Fund” or “Legal Fund”. I cannot attest to the validity of these other websites as I have not received any funds collected, intended to support my family and I through this trying, tragic time.

I have created a Paypal account solely linked on this website as I would like to provide an avenue to thank my supporters personally and ensure that any funds provided are used only for living expenses and legal defense, in lieu of my forced inability to maintain employment. I will also personally, maintain accountability of all funds received. I reassure you, every donation is appreciated.

Sincerely,
George Zimmerman

Let’s remember, Zimmerman’s “life altering event” was entirely of his making, and “altered” Trayvon Martin’s life far more substantially. Zimmerman should donate all funds to Martin’s family.

Zimmerman immediately was lambasted throughout the Internet for using “a photo of a vandalized black cultural center at Ohio State University,” as Think Progress first reported. That photo, at right, in the lower left corner.

Gawker notes:

Otherwise, the site is fairly bare bones. A section titled “The Facts” explains that Zimmerman cannot comment on the events of the night he shot Trayvon Martin. “Album” includes two photos, one of a “JUSTICE FOR ZIMMERMAN” sign and the other of “LONG LIVE ZIMMERMAN” tagged onto the side of a building. The intriguing “My Race” page includes a single quote from Thomas Paine: “The world is my country, all mankind are my brethren, and to do good is my religion.”

UPDATE: The Martin’s family attorney isn’t happy. Via GlobalGrind:

Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump blasted Zimmerman’s new website in an appearance with Trayvon’s mother on Good Morning America.

Crump told GMA:

“You know he says that he experienced a life-altering event. Well, Trayvon Martin experienced a life-ending event.”

Crump noted several times that Trayvon was not armed and said his grieving parents have to live with losing their son.

“George Zimmerman is trying to have us believe that his life is so terrible now,” he said.

If you head over to therealgeorgezimmerman.com, know the site loads very slowly, and the inner pages load even slower.
