Trump Says Watching “Very Very Poor” School Kids Mop Floors Is “Fun”

Donald Trump today promised Newt Gingrich that he would create a special show in his “Apprentice” format that would focus on getting jobs for, in the words of Gingrich, “very very poor children.” Trump, who met today with Gingrich in his New York City office at Trump Tower, promised to take 10 “apprenti” (no such word actually exists) and get them jobs, a reference to Gingrich’s repeated attacks on “very very poor children” last week.

In recent weeks, Gingrich has been pounding forward his idea to have poor children whose parents are on welfare take part-​time jobs as school janitors, calling child labor laws, “truly stupid.”

Trump, in a symptomatically and characteristically tone-deaf moment, said of the show idea, “We’re going to have a little fun with it.” Because, apparently, seeing “very very poor children” mop floors is “fun.”

“Really poor children, in really poor neighborhoods have no habits of working and have nobody around them who works, so they have no habit of showing up on Monday. They have no habit of staying all day, they have no habit of ‘I do this and you give me cash,’ unless it is illegal,” Gingrich stated late last week.

Alex Seitz-Wald at Think Progress asked, “Why anyone would want Trump’s endorsement is a bit of a mystery, as only 6 percent of voters said they would be more likely to support Trump-approved candid, while a full 31 percent said Trump’s endorsement would make them less likely to support a candidate,” and added:

“The obvious branding aside, it’s not immediately clear that the New York City Dept. of Education will be interested,” Politico’s Maggie Haberman wrote. Indeed, the move appears to be little more than PR stunt to paper over Gingrich’s embarrassing comments on child labor laws. No matter how well intentioned, 10 students is less than a drop in the ocean. New York’s school system has about 1.25 million students, 29 percent of whom are impoverished, according to Bloomberg News. Unless Trump is interesting taking on about 360,000 “apprenti” from New York City alone, it looks like poor students will be stuck cleaning the toilets in Newt Gingrich’s America.
