TRACY MORGAN NOW SUPPORTS SAME-SEX MARRIAGE, WOULD LOVE HIS GAY SON

Tracy Morgan now says he supports same-sex marriage, calls homophobia an “abusive sickness,” and is most sad about “the comments I made about kids and bullying,” adding, “I believe everyone deserves the right to be happy and marry who they want too: gay, white, black, male or female.” The NBC 30 Rock comedian, who just one week ago had an anti-gay homophobic rant on stage that included a threat to stab to death his son if he were gay, apologized again in an interview with Russell Simmons. Morgan’s stand up performance drew massive nationwide outrage, including condemnation from fellow comedians and co-stars.

“Of all the sicknesses, there is probably none more abusive than homophobia,” Morgan told Simmons, adding, “In my heart, I know that the words I used are indefensible. I appreciate the love from my friends and fans, but I was wrong. Period.”

“My heart is committed to giving everyone the same rights that I deserve for myself. I don’t care if you love the same sex as long as you have the ability to love someone. Also, you should have the right no matter who you are to protect and serve our country. I am deeply sorry for the comments I made. What I am most sad about is the comments I made about kids and bullying. I would never want any young person to think that I wasn’t on their side and if any young person thinks they can bully a young gay kid, come see me at 30 Rock.  On the corner, I would be happy to meet you.  Or Brooklyn if you can’t make it into Manhattan.”

To those who might think Morgan’s apparent about-face was in response to massive pressure from LGBT organizations, not to mention outrage on Twitter and in the mainstream media, Morgan says, “This is not about any intimidation, this is about what’s right.”

Morgan’s homophobic rant came one week ago Saturday, at his performance in Nashville, Tennessee, but the country did not hear about it until one attendee wrote a long note on Facebook, and Truth Wins Out issued a press release demanding Morgan address the accusations.

Morgan’s violent use of the “n” word, false comments that lesbians were faking being gay and were just angry at men, and that homosexuality is a choice that the media teaches kids to make, left many angered and, as Kevin Rogers, the audience member whose Facebook note fanned outrage said, “disappointed.” Morgan apologized Friday, but few felt it was sufficient, and that he needed to do more.

Morgan’s co-stars Alec Baldwin and Cheyenne Jackson late Saturday joined 30 Rock producer and star Tina Fey, and NBC Chairman Bob Greenblatt, along with Wanda Sykes, Chris Rock, George Takei, Keith Boykin, and others in the condemnation of Tracy Morgan for his June 4 hate-filled anti-gay rant.
