Tony Perkins: U.S. Economy In Trouble Because Of High Divorce Rate

Tony Perkins, president of the certified hate group the Family Research Council, today via Twitter linked the U.S. economy’s troubles to divorce. “Telling: US reached pinnacle of economic power in mid-to-late 1950s. Our marriage rate then led the world. Now our divorce rate leads,” Perkins said in a tweet, obviously ignoring the fact that in the 1950s, women in the workforce increased 18%, the TV became mass-produced, and color TV was introduced in 1954, the number of people entering college soared for the first time ever, rock and roll became popular, NASA was created in 1958…

Yes, Mr. Perkins, surely divorce, which costs couples huge sums in lawyer fees, which forces families into two homes, expanding the need for housing, housekeeping services, and even putting people into the workforce, surely divorce is the problem with the U.S. economy.

Divorce is a sad, sad event that is all too prevalent in America, but it is not the cause of our poor economy. That would be Republican fiscal “policies.”
