Tony Perkins: ‘Future Of The Family’ Depends On Churches Voting Against Gay Marriage

Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council, recorded a desperate video demanding pastors in Maine turn their congregants into “Christian citizens,” or else “the future of the family Maine” may end. Maine is facing a ballot initiative this November that will decide whether or not to re-establish the right of same-sex couples to marry.

“Get out the vote. Make a determined effort to remind your people of their responsibility as Christian citizens to participate in government,” Perkins warns. And by “government,” Perkins means, excluding loving same-sex couples from being able to marry. “As Christian we have a responsibility,” he adds.

“Our religious liberty is in jeopardy,” Perkins fear mongers. What religious liberty? Why, the religious liberty to treat LGBTQ people as second class citizens, to use the Bible to marginalize and attack gay people, that “religious liberty.”

“Our children’s education hangs in the balance… The future of the family in Maine depends upon you and your church.”

Because, apparently, in Tony Perkins’ mind, if gay people are allowed to marry, heterosexual-headed households will fall apart?

Under Tony Perkins’ leadership, the Family Research Council has transitioned into an anti-gay hate group, as certified by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Who else is on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of active anti-gay hate groups? The Westboro Baptist Church, who call themselves, “God Hates Fags.”

Jonathan Phelps, the son of the founder of God Hates Fags, yesterday in an exclusive interview with journalist David Pakman, said that gay people should be put to death.  “It’s the view of the Bible, it’s the clear teaching of the Bible,” Phelps said, adding that “the established human government should be following the rules of the Bible.”

While Perkins is not calling for the death penalty for gay people, he and his organization sit on the same list as those who do, because they spread falsehoods and harmful, false rhetoric about the LGBTQ community.

Meanwhile, the 2010 U.S. census found there are two million children being raised by LGBT parents. And we also know, via the U.S. Government’s Census Bureau, “there were 131,729 same-sex married couple households and 514,735 same-sex unmarried partner households in the United States.”

The family is being helped, not harmed, by same-sex couples.
