MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts today interviewed Fred Sainz of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) to discuss Oklahoma lawmaker Sally Kern’s anti-gay comments that homosexuals are more dangerous than terrorism. Opening the segment, Roberts mentioned yesterday’s repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, and the tragic story of the suicide of 14-year old Jamey Rodemeyer.

Sainz says, “often times the statements that are made by our leaders, whether they be religious leaders or elected officials, are given increased credibility and great weight.” Sainz adds that,”these kinds of statements lead to the fact that gays and lesbians can still be fired in 35 states across the country for their sexual orientation or in 41 states for their gender identity. There is also an epidemic of bullying across this country, and we believe there is a responsibility on our part to call out the statements by Representative Kern as not only inaccurate but as being incredibly injurious to a civil dialog in this country to the barriers to equality.”
“I do believe they are the equivalent of hate speech,” Sainz added, responding to Thomas Roberts’ question.
