Today is GLSEN’s annual Day of Silence, the day when students across the country join together to remain silent to highlight their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students and to protest the bullying and harassment of LGBT students. The Day of Silence was originally created in 1996 by University of Virginia student Maria Pulzetti, and has grown to all 50 states, the district of Columbia, and countries around the world. GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network seeks to end discrimination, harassment, and bullying based on sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression in K-12 schools.
