Surprise! Rand Paul Is Just As Uninformed On Same-Sex Marriage As He Is On Everything Else

Rand Paul has solved the issue of same-sex marriage! Just change the tax code!

The problem with the libertarian mindset is it starts with the “get off my lawn” old man and elevates his hermit-ness into a political philosophy. While it might, in certain circumstances, be nice to have the local, state, and federal governments “get out of our business,” that position requires that the other actors, say, your neighbors, or the oil companies, or North Korea, all act with the same largess and all come from humanitarian positions.

But then the real world shows up and you’re left with the BP Oil “Spill” or fraud or other bad actions and you’re left undefended.

U.S. Senator Rand Paul‘s idea about same-sex marriage is that the government should just get out of the marriage business. He admits he’s “an old-fashioned traditionalist.”

“I believe in the historic and religious definition of marriage,” Paul tells Robert Costa of the homophobic, racist, Nazi-defending National Review. “That being said, I’m not for eliminating contracts between adults. I think there are ways to make the tax code more neutral, so it doesn’t mention marriage. Then we don’t have to redefine what marriage is; we just don’t have marriage in the tax code.”

See? Problem solved!

Just make the tax code gender-neutral (OK by me) and then everything’s fine.

Except, of course, it’s not.

Rand Paul is just as uninformed on same-sex marriage as he is on everything else. That whole 12-plus hour filibuster could have been forgone with a few phone calls.

For better or for worse, marriage is a state-chartered institution, and it will be ’til death do us part.

In a Ayn-Rand-Paul world, we wouldn’t have to worry about hospital visitation right, inheritance rights, adoption rights, military notification, etc., but in the real world, we do, and those are just a few of the many reason why we need the government involved.

Also, why the heck does Rand Paul think marriage — same-sex or opposite-sex — is about the tax code?

No one (or almost practically no one) gets married for tax purposes. Perhaps the Senator’s wife should be asking him some tough questions?

Rand Paul is expected to run for president in 2016.
