Student’s ‘You Deserve Rape’ Campaign Draws Anger — Administrators Say ‘Protected Speech’

A student at the University of Arizona’s campaign, which includes holding up a sign that reads, “You Deserve Rape” and shouting those words on the campus commons is drawing anger. Dean Saxton, whose tee-shirt says “Virgin Pride” and is known as “Brother Dean,” also has signs that read, “Sorority Girls Are Whores,” “Rapists Deserve The Death Penalty,” and “Frat Boys Are The Rapists,” but his “You Deserve Rape” is his primary message.

Why?

Dean says “if you dress like a whore, act like a whore, you’re probably going to get raped,” the Daily Wildcat, the University of Arizona student paper reports:

“I think that girls that dress and act like it,” Saxton said, “they should realize that they do have partial responsibility, because I believe that they’re pretty much asking for it.”

The Dean of Students Office received stacks of written complaints, emails and multiple phone calls regarding Saxton’s sermon about women, said Kendal Washington White, interim dean of students.

Saxton has never directly threatened anyone in particular, and his language has been general enough that he isn’t targeting a particular person, White said. However, a university attorney was contacted to discuss the situation.

“We find it to be vulgar and vile,” White said. “However, it is protected speech. He has yet to, at this point, violate the student code of conduct.”

The Huffington Post notes that “Saxton regularly tweets insults about Muslims and feminists. In one tweet from March, he offered ‘A good question for your first date,’ with a photo of a shirt reading ‘Will You Submit To Me?'”
