Still Flailing: Why Are Anti-Gay Books Still Topping Amazon’s List?

“Focus On The Family” Book #1 Search Result

So, at this point we know Amazon claims some guy in France was accidently responsible for the “mislabeling” of over 57,000 products, supposedly not all of them gay-related. Those items became classified as “adult” and were removed from general search results. Amazon has not, nor do I expect them to, projected the number of customers it has permanently lost, nor the loss in sales volume. And most are still pretty disappointed with Amazon’s insufficient response to the issue on Sunday and Monday.

Yesterday, while writing “Amazon Fails Gay Readers And Writers, Reclassifies GLBTQ Books As “Adult”“, I did a search for “homosexuality” on Amazon’s site, and got these results (you can pull up the image here):

A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Homosexuality by Joseph Nicolosi and Linda Ames Nicolosi

Homosexuality (general topic fiction, non-fiction)

You Don’t Have to Be Gay: Hope and Freedom for Males Struggling With Homosexuality or for Those Who Know of Someone Who Is by Jeff Konrad

For The Bible Tells Me So ~ Gene Robinson, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Imogene Robinson

Not very LGBTQ-friendly!

Today, doing the same search, I’m not seeing a more LGBTQ-friendly result:

101 Frequently Asked Questions About Homosexuality by Mike Haley

Homosexuality (general topic fiction, non-fiction)

What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality by Daniel A. Helminiak

Homosexuality and Civilization by Louis Crompton

The first result is written by a “Focus on the Family” “ex-gay”. From Amazon’s own Product Description:

101 Probing Questions…101 Compassionate and Scriptural Answers

“from Focus on the Family’s Mike Haley

Almost daily we hear news reports that confirm the acceptance of homosexuality in our culture.  Homosexuals are adopting children, appearing as characters on television programs, taking vacations catering to an exclusively gay clientele, and  even seeking the right to “marry” their partners.  But is this acceptance healthy for society?

Few topics can raise so many questions so quickly. And for many readers, those questions hit close to home as they learn of the homosexuality of a loved one or close friend.

Here are the answers to the most often asked questions about homosexuality, fielded by an expert on the subject…and a former homosexual himself.”

Amazon, what’s going on?

**Update** What are Amazon’s serch results based on? If “homosexuality” returns as it’s first choice, “101 Frequently Asked Questions About Homosexuality by Mike Haley” which has a sales rank of “376,926 in Books”, why does “What the Bible Really Says About Homosexuality”, which has a sales rank of “#24,627 in Books”, appear below it? And why doesn’t Andrew Sullivan’s classic, “Virtually Normal”, which has a sales rank of “#388,922 in Books” appear within the first 48 results?
