Stephen Colbert Features The New Civil Rights Movement On ‘Colbert Report’
Stephen Colbert last night on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” featured the masthead and quotes from The New Civil Rights Movement’s original investigative report, “Billy Graham Endorses Romney Then Scrubs Site Calling Mormonism A ‘Cult’.”
The Colbert Report noted “Reverend Billy Graham disencultifies Mormonism after meeting with Mitt Romney,” in Thursday night’s “Tip Of The Hat, Wag Of The Finger” segment (video below.)
The New Civil Rights Movement’s reporting last month provided immediate and incontrovertible proof that the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association scrubbed their website of all references to Mormonism — which it had for decades labeled a “cult” — immediately after the 93-year old televangelist pioneer endorsed Mitt Romney, a Mormon, for President, as Colbert mentioned.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, a miracle has occurred for Mitt, because with God, all things are deletable,” Colbert ironically scoffed, adding, “a trip of my hat to the Reverend Billy Graham, for ‘disencultifying’ Mormonism.”
The New Civil Rights Movement’s reporting also forced the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association to answer critics last month asking why Reverend Graham decided to endorse Mitt Romney, a Mormon, and why they attempted to hide decades worth of evidence labeling the Mormon faith as a cult.
“We removed the (cult) information from the website because we do not wish to participate in a theological debate about something that has become politicized during this campaign,” Ken Barun, chief of staff for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, was forced to admit, via a statement.
Over a dozen mainstream media outlets, including CNN, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Newsweek/The Daily Beast, Slate, The Huffington Post, the Kansas City Star, Alternet, Daily Kos, The Raw Story, Christianity Today, along with Townhall.com, and Brigham Young University, have cited The New Civil Rights Movement’s original reporting on the inconvenient timing of Billy Graham’s elimination of the label “cult” from his website, to support his endorsement of Mitt Romney.
“The Colbert Report” is a wildly popular late night political humor show in its ninth season, hosted by political satirist Stephen Colbert, and reaches over 1.5 million viewers nightly.
The New Civil Rights Movement, entering its fifth year, is America’s fastest-growing news and opinion site focused on progressive and LGBT readers.
From Politico to The Washington Post, from The National Journal to The Washington Examiner, The New Civil Rights Movement has been quoted nationally and internationally.
The New Civil Rights Movement bridges the gap between progressive and LGBT blogs, and mainstream news sites, which helps both LGBT and non-LGBT people see and understand our issues more clearly.
The New Civil Rights Movement has also been cited repeatedly by Andrew Sullivan’s Daily Dish, Salon.com, and The Wall Street Journal, and repeatedly has been labeled “Best Opinion†by The Week, and recognized as “one of the smartest sites on the web†by the editor in chief of 365Gay.com, “a go-to blog for both reports and analysis of the most recent gay politics,†and “thoughtful, probing,†by Mediaite, and “very smart†by Joe.My.God., the 2010 winner of the GLAAD Media Award in the Outstanding Blog category.
The New Civil Rights Movement was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award last year.
