Santorum Would Reinstate DADT: Gays Should “Keep Their Private Matters To Themselves”

Rick Santorum on Sunday spoke with the Tony Perkins and said he absolutely would reinstate DADT, the now-repealed Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell law that banned gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members from serving openly. Of course, the repeal of DADT does not prohibit a future president as Commander in Chief from reinstating it.

“I don’t believe it’s in the best interest of our men and women in uniform. That doesn’t men that people who are gays and lesbians can’t serve, it’s just that they can serve in the context of, what I think everybody in the military, just, keep their own private matters to themselves, and serve this country accordingly.”

Tony Perkins is the head of the SPLC-certified anti-gay hate group, the Family Research Council. One of FRC’s top leaders, Peter Sprigg, said of the prospect of DADT repeal, “If the law is overturned and open homosexuals are welcomed into the military, the number of homosexuals in the armed forces can only increase — leading to a corresponding increase in same-sex sexual assaults.”

Rick Santorum not only never served his country in the armed forces, but this year actually had the gall to suggest his time as a Senator was comparable to military service. Because a Senator’s salary of $174,000 annually is comparable to, say, an Army officer making far less than $100,000 annually. Not to mention, all the perks a Senator gets, compared to all the sacrifice an Army officer makes.

“I grew up around veterans, I grew up around, you know, folks who loved their country and served their country,” Santorum said in January, according to Yahoo News:

“I didn’t see working in government service and being in politics as anything but serving your country, and doing in some ways — in a civilian sense — what a lot of folks did in a military sense. And I saw it as something that is honorable and good to do.”

“The rest of the country doesn’t function unless the government keeps us free,” he added, “and we need people in politics just like we need people in uniform to do that.”

Not to mention, when you fail so miserably in office and lose re-election by a landslide, as a Senator, you can get on boards of think tanks and non-profits and tour the country making tens of thousands of dollars for an hour-long speech, write books, and then, when the cash seems to be drying up a tad, you can announce you’re running for president and rake in the cash. Which is all that the GOP presidential campaigns are today: money-making scams.
