Santorum To Piers Morgan: Calling My Bigoted Views On Gay Marriage Bigotry Is Bigotry

“Saying the Church is bigoted because it holds that opinion that is biblically-based, I think is in itself an act of bigotry.”

Rick Santorum, a Republican candidate for president, appeared on CNN’s “Piers Morgan Tonight” and discussed his views on homosexuality, same-sex marriage, his comment that there is an anti-Santorum gay “jihad,” and sin. The former Pennsylvania Senator said that “most people would find rather unappealing” homosexual sex, and suggested other “consensual acts,” presumably, polygamy and polyandry, for example, were comparable to same-gender sex. Santorum buckled when Morgan suggested his views “bordered on bigotry,” and carried that hurt into his conversation later in the day with Penn State students, who also slammed him for his anti-gay views.

Santorum tries to be too clever, but ends up being too clever by half, almost comparing himself with Supreme Court justices.

He refused to answer whether or not homosexuality is a “sin,” but then says, “there are a lot of things in society that are quote sins or moral wrongs that we don’t make illegal.” And then acknowledges he is a Christian and subscribes to the Catholic Church’s teachings. So… then…

Santorum often referred to his anti-gay views as merely “public policy,” which he has often done in the past. But clearly Santorum couldn’t manage his message on national television, responding to Piers Morgan’s question, if Santorum had a gay son, Santorum describes homosexuality as a “decision,” says it’s something you “admit,” (not, “acknowledge,”) and says, “I know a lot of gay people,” as he has said before. Notice how he cocks his head as he says it.

Notice how he sees everything in terms of black and white, good and evil, right and wrong. Imagine a President Santorum?…

Throughout, Santorum works very hard to not deliver a soundbite for the media — and he succeeds. But his arrogance is appalling.

At the end, Morgan corners him on “gay marriage,” and Santorum says, “Saying the Church is bigoted because it holds that opinion that is biblically-based, I think is in itself an act of bigotry.”

Too clever. By half.

As always, our sincere thanks to Dave Evans of for this valuable and important clip!
