Santorum: Starbucks CEO Wants All Shareholders Who Don’t Support Gay Marriage To Sell Their Stock

Former senator and failed Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum falsely claims that Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz told all supporters of “traditional marriage” to sell their shares because Starbucks doesn’t want anyone to own Starbucks stock unless they support same-sex marriage.

Of course, that’s a lie, and that Santorum is forced to stoop that low shows that he knows he’s losing the “culture war,” and, most importantly, it demonstrates that Santorum is unfit to hold public office.

Speaking recently on his organization’s radio show, “Patriot Voices Radio,” Santorum said that “the CEO of Starbucks was asked a question by one of the shareholders at the shareholder meeting — you know they’ve taken a very aggressive stance against natural marriage and for changing the definition of marriage and they made the point that: hey look this is hurting your company, it’s hurting our sales because people are not buying Starbucks anymore.”

Santorum continued with his tall tale, saying that Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz “made this bombastic statement, he said: ‘if you are a shareholder of Starbucks and you support traditional marriage then sell your shares, we don’t want you as a shareholder.'”

What Schultz actually said — and we have the video, was:

“We did provide a 38 percent shareholder return. I would suspect not many companies provided a 38 percent return over the past twelve months. Having said that it’s not an economic decision. The lens we use to make decisions is the lens of our people. We employ over 200,000 people in this company, and we want to embrace diversity.

“If you feel, respectfully, that you can get a higher return than the 38 percent you got last year, it’s a free country. You can sell your shares in Starbucks and buy shares in another company. Thank you very much.”

Santorum is lying, plain and simple.
