Santorum: My Fighting Gay Marriage Is Akin To Lincoln Fighting Slavery

Rick Santorum Sunday offensively compared his personal and political fight against same-sex marriage equality to President Abraham Lincoln’s fight against slavery. The slave trade in the Americas essentially imprisoned over 12 million people across centuries, whereas same-sex marriage is a constitutional unalienable and fundamental right of being human. Using front-runner Herman Cain’s comments to NBC’s David Gregory as a jumping off point, Santorum issued a statement attacking Cain, saying,

“I have been a long-time advocate for states’ rights. However, I believe as Abraham Lincoln did – that states don’t have the rights to legalize moral wrongs.

“Mr. Cain, Congresswoman Bachmann and Governor Perry all believe 50 different definitions of marriage is fine, I strongly disagree and will continue fighting for traditional marriage between one man and woman.”

Additionally offensive is Santorum’s comparison of himself to one of America’s greatest presidents, and using that comparison in conjunction with attacking an African-American.

Santorum’s political future is dim. He just pulled out of the Nevada primary, and “reported raising less than $1 million in the third quarter. He reportedly had $190,000 cash on hand, while he owed vendors $72,000,” according to Politics PA.

Saturday Night Live spoofed Santorum this weekend, depicting Santorum at a GOP debate, live from a gay bar in San Francisco. Santorum claimed he had not seen the skit, but was “not surprised” by it.

Earlier this month Santorum claimed that traditional marriage could fix America’s economy, and lied, falsely claiming President Obama had instructed military chaplains to marry same-sex couples.
