Romney Calls Gay Marriage ‘A Blow To The Foundation Of Civilization’
Mitt Romney in a 2006 speech called same-sex marriage “a blow to the foundation of civilization.” The event, hosted by Tony Perkins, the head of the Family Research Council, now a certified anti-gay hate group, was held at Boston’s Tremont Temple Baptist Church, in Massachusetts, where Romney was a Republican governor from 2003-2007.
Romney was attempting to advance the lie that same-sex marriage will be forced upon the people, saying the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled, “our constitution requires people of the same gender to marry.” No, it merely found banning same-sex couples from the institution of marriage was unconstitutional. Big difference.
This right-wing boilerplate trash, that children need a mother and a father and therefore same-sex couples cannot be allowed to marry holds as much eight as saying flowers need water to grow and therefore roses should be banned in the summertime.
Children, studies prove, do as well and sometimes better when raised by same-sex couples. Two parents may or may not be better than one, depending on who the parents are. A loving and supportive home is what children need to grow and thrive. The gender of their parents carries little weight.
Brian Tashman at Right Wing Watch, who located this video, writes today:
Warning against the “homosexual agenda,†Family Research Council president Tony Perkins introduced Mitt and Ann Romney and lauded the former Massachusetts governor for understanding “the threat that this imposes to our nation.â€
Romney condemned people, especially activist judges, whom he accused of “trying to establish one religion, the religion of secularism†and “reject traditional values†and “reject the values of our Founders.â€
“Here in Massachusetts, activist judges struck a blow to the foundation of civilization—the family—they ruled that our constitution requires people of the same gender to marry,†Romney said. “The principal burden of this court’s ruling doesn’t fall on adults, it falls on children.†He continued, “The price of same-sex marriage is paid by the children, our fight for marriage then should focus then on the needs of children, not the rights of adults.â€
Romney called for the adoption of a Federal Marriage Amendment to block the “spreading secular religion and its substitute values†that he said “weaken the foundation of the family†and dishonor the Founders.
Other speakers included Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, American Family Association president Don Wildmon, and preacher Wellington Boone, who reminisced about the time when sodomy was a capital offense in America, joked about “sodomite island,†and said the push for LGBT rights represents the “rape of the civil rights movement.â€
