Right Network’s Kelsey Grammer: Marriage A “Religious Rite” Or, “Right”?

Kelsey Grammer, poster child of the Right and the Right Network, has a few things to say about what’s wrong with, well, everything, despite his new network’s tagline, “All that’s Right with the world.”

The star of “Cheers,” and “Frasier” is now stumping (shilling?) for Comcast’s (oh, wait, Comcast isn’t a major investor?… My friend Karoli at Crooks and Liars explains…) new network, that no doubt will be the home to those too moderate to appear on FOX.

Grammer, an ardent right-wing supporter, ironically, is starring (to the consternation of Michael Musto,) in the Broadway revival of “La Cage Aux Folles,” a show about a same-sex couple and their son’s upcoming marriage to the daughter of an extreme right-wing Senator. You know the rest.

In an interview with Nicki Gostin at PopEater, Grammer had this to say about marriage:

I have a funny thing about marriage. I think that marriage is the providence of the church. I think it’s a religious rite. I don’t understand the civil angle on marriage at all. So am I pro-my friends who love each other getting married? Yes — gay, straight or otherwise. I don’t have an issue about it. Somebody obviously thought it would be fun to tax marriage one day, so they made it a government thing.

So, atheists and agnostics… Oh, whatever, Kelsey. But, hey, if he’s OK with marriage equality I’m thrilled! Right or Left, I’ll take everyone’s support for our rights! Hopefully Grammer isn’t too moderate for the Right Network. Would hate to see those Tea Party Patriots fire their second actor.

Oh, by the way, Michael Jensen at AfterElton has some thoughts and a poll: “How do you feel about Kelsey Grammer starring in La Cage Aux Folles?”
