Last month, Rick Santorum told a group of college students that no one has ever died because they didn’t have health care. He said it in defiance of a Harvard study that proves that 45,000 Americans die each year because they don’t have health care. And he said it defiantly. “I reject that number completely, that people die in America because of lack of health insurance,†Santorum said, adding:
“People die in America because people die in America. And people make poor decisions with respect to their health and their healthcare. And they don’t go to the emergency room or they don’t go to the doctor when they need to.”
Typical. Blame the victim, reject all science.
Over the past month, since we posted the article, we’ve received several very sad tales, in the comments section, and on social media sites, like this thread on Reddit, and Twitter, and Facebook. The article itself has had hundreds of thousands of people reading it, and this week, former Congressman Alan Grayson mentioned it in an op-ed over at Daily Kos.
So, and forgive me if this is too much to ask, or too painful, but I’d like to send to the anti-gay, anti-science, uncompassionate, former Senator, Rick Santorum, a message.
Who do you now who’s died because they just didn’t have health care, couldn’t afford to go to the doctor, couldn’t pay for their medications, their tests, were turned away from a hospital or doctor’s office, and suffered, perhaps, sadly, died as a result?
We’ll find a way to send Mr. Santorum the message.
It’s one America, and Santorum, need to hear, loud and clear.
