Rep. Maxine Waters Tells Crowd “Tea Party Can Go Straight To Hell”

Published

on

The “Tea Party can go straight to hell,” Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) told a crowd of more than one thousand of her constituents Saturday evening, after fellow Congressional Black Caucus member Rep. Allen West had used racist and slave imagery to describe the former Chair and long-time Democratic leader. “This is a tough game. You can’t be intimidated. You can’t be frightened,” Waters added.

Rep. West called himself a “modern-day Harriet Tubman,” and attacked Waters, the Democratic Party, and President Obama at a recent meeting of the Congressional Black Caucus, of which he is the only Republican  member, and called Waters an “overseer” and likened the Democratic Party to a “21st century plantation,” which drew great ire from many, including Waters.

Politico reports “Waters mentioned in an interview that West’s own brother was at a job fair she was hosting in Atlanta, making his comments “a little bit outrageous, a little bit ridiculous and … hard to respond to because [it] absolutely does not make good sense.”

Washington Post opinion writer and member of the Post editorial board Jonathan Capehart wrote,

“Today, I have a rule for black elected officials (and potential office seekers), especially if they are Republicans. Never invoke slave imagery or liken yourselves to historical figures from the era. You’ll never measure up and you trivialize your argument — not to mention the sacrifices made by the heroes you think you’re honoring with such a comparison.

“By calling himself “a modern-day Harriet Tubman,” a famed “conductor“ of the Underground Railroad who freed more than 300 slaves over the course of a decade, Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) is a flagrant offender of this new edict.”

In the past month alone, West has associated homosexuality to ice cream, opposed gays in the military, said, “you cannot compare me and my race to a behavior. Sexuality is a behavior,” called an LGBT group “intolerable,” called Obama supporters “a threat to the gene pool,” attacked fellow Congressman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and more.

‘In His Mind He’s the Hero’: Columnist Delivers Devastating Blow to ‘Joe Manchin’s Mighty Delusions’

Published

A Washington Post columnist Sunday evening responded to U.S. Senator Joe Manchin’s (D-WV) op-ed and TV tour announcing he will not support HR1/S1, the “For the People Act” to protect voting rights.

“Manchin has become the Senate’s Walter Mitty: a man who believes himself the champion of a fantasy and who has hope but no plan,” writes The Post’s James Downie. “He believes he will save the country by recruiting ’10 good Republicans,’ even though dreaming doesn’t will into existence that many Republicans who will cast a fair-minded vote.”

Manchin says instead of supporting the “For the People Act” he would support passing the “John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act,” which would restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965. But that bill will not nullify all the dangerous voter suppression laws Republicans are passing across the country.

“And as for passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act in a nonpartisan fashion, Manchin doesn’t have suggestions. ‘It’s starting out to be bipartisan,’ he told CBS’s John Dickerson, before listing exactly one Republican, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — far short of the 10 he’d need to pass it (or anything else) without a filibuster. When Dickerson asked why Republicans would vote for a bill that would restrict their gains at the state level, Manchin replied, ‘If we can’t come to an agreement on that, God help us, John.’ God help us, indeed.”

“I’m not being naive,” Manchin insisted. “I’m going to continue to keep working with my bipartisan friends and hopefully we can get more of them.” Again, he has hope but no “how” — the epitome of naivete. Worse still was his claim on CBS that “my Republican friends and colleagues see the deadlock also. This is not something they desire or wish.”

That’s past naivete or foolishness — it’s straight-up delusion.

“In his mind, he’s the hero of this story,” Downie says. “In truth, he’s the patsy. And the country pays the price for his delusions.”

Mo Brooks Posts His Gmail Password While Ranting About Eric Swalwell Subpoena

Published

Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) lashed out on Twitter Sunday afternoon when his wife was served with a subpoena for Rep. Eric Swalwell’s (D-CA) civil lawsuit. Brooks ranted on Twitter that the subpoena was illegally served because the process server was caught “sneaking into my house and accosting my wife.”

In the course of his rant and need to post a screen capture of the penalties of illegally trespassing, Brooks accidentally posted his PIN number and the password to his Gmail account, which are taped under his screen on his laptop.

Brooks has also been caught blocking people on Twitter from the official Congressional account, which is illegal. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was caught doing the same and was forced to settle with a liberal group for a $10,000 fee. At least two people have reported being blocked by Brooks, including actor, producer and women’s equality activist Patricia Arquette.

‘You’re Doing It Exactly the Wrong Way’: Chris Wallace Shreds Joe Manchin for Enabling GOP ‘Obstruction’

Published

on

Fox News host Chris Wallace on Sunday challenged Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), who is refusing to support filibuster reform to pass a voting rights bill and other progressive initiatives.

“You said you oppose scrapping the filibuster,” Wallace noted. “The question I have is whether or not — and you say that you hope that will bring the parties together — the question I have is whether or not you’re doing it exactly the wrong way?”

“Hear me out on this,” the Fox News host continued. “If you were to keep the idea that maybe you would vote to kill the filibuster, wouldn’t that give Republicans an incentive to actually negotiate because old Joe Manchin is out there and who knows what he’s going to do? By taking it off the table, haven’t you empowered Republicans to be obstructionists?”

“I don’t think so,” Manchin said cautiously. “Because we have seven brave Republicans that continue to vote for what they know is right and the facts as they see them, not worrying about the political consequences.”

The West Virginia senator insisted that many of his “Republican friends” agree with him.

“I’m just very hopeful and I see good signs,” Manchin said. “Give us some time.”

Wallace interrupted to point out that Republicans had recently used the filibuster to kill a commission to examine the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“Republicans blocked that,” Wallace reminded the senator. “Sen. McConnell, the head of the Republicans in the Senate, says that he’s 100% focused on blocking the Biden agenda. Question: Aren’t you being naive about this continuing talk about bipartisan cooperation?”

“I’m not being naive,” Manchin objected. “I think he’s 100% wrong in trying to block all the good things that we’re trying to do for America. It would be a lot better if we had participation and we’re getting participation.”

“I’m going to continue to keep working with my bipartisan friends,” he added. “There were 33 Democrats in 2017 that signed a letter to please save the filibuster and save our democracy. That’s what I’m trying to do.”
