Poll: 78% Of The American People Want “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Repealed Now
How many other issues are The American People this united on? CNN just today released a poll finding 78% of Americans, or “nearly 8 in 10 favor gays in the military.”
And yet, GOP obstructionists, this time, with 78% of “the American People” wanting gay men and lesbians to be able to serve their country openly, still are promising to stand in the way of repeal.
How is this possible?
Seriously? How can any politician claiming to represent the will of the people, vote against repeal?
Ask Scott Brown, who has promised to vote against repeal.
Ask Mike Pence (R-IN) who on Monday said, “The American people don’t want the American military to be used to advance a liberal political agenda. And House Republicans will stand on that principle.”
This isn’t about principles. Certainly not American principles.
I don’t believe that “majority rules” should automatically be the law of the land. Nor do I believe that in every case, politicians should vote for or against something just because their constituents want it. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 would not have passed if it were left up to “The American People.”
That’s why we elect politicians, to represent our best, long-term interests, not just the immediate will of the majority.
“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” is a crime against humanity. It has been called a stain on our laws.
