“The Silent Chronicles”

Part IV: Awake

1:32 a.m.
Sleep evades my queries.
I’m drenched in a cold sweat.

1:33 a.m.
Pulling the covers back I slide out of bed.
I quietly exit the room.

1:34 a.m.
I pad to the kitchen.

1:39 a.m.
Warm tea slithers down my throat.
My eyelids gain weight.

1:42 a.m.
I place my mug in the counter, turn, and walk back to bed.
I hear the mug fall and break, I ignore it.

1:44 a.m.
Sinking into bed, beside him, I feel safe, warm, protected.

1:45 a.m.
I turn towards him.
He shifts, unknowing.

1:47 a.m.
I crave to kiss his lips.
I settle for a peck on his shoulder to not wake him.

1:48 a.m.
I let my eyes move across his body and back to his face.

1:49 a.m.
Turning back I mumble a prayer for sleep.

1:50 a.m.
Darkness,
But not sleep.

1:52 a.m.
I beg.
Sleep lacks empathy.

1:52 a.m.
My eyelids remain heavy, but fail to fall.

1:53 a.m.
My ears feel a vibration.
Was that sound or breath?

2:00 a.m.
I am taken by sleep.
No mercy, no prisoners…finally.

2:00 a.m.
Silence is deafening,
But it is silent.

…

2:12 a.m.
My breath catches.
My eyes gasp open…
