Orson Scott Card has taken a few moments out of his busy anti-gay agenda to get his name back in the news, and we are only too happy to oblige. In all likelihood, his latest anti-Obama racist rant isn’t a new “Ender’s Game” marketing ploy from Lion’s Gate, but stranger things have happened.
Card, who used to sit on the board of the National Organization For Marriage, has dreamed up a dystopian crisis that includes what one might call a unique jobs plan.
“Obama is, by character and preference, a dictator,” Card cries, claiming he treats the Constitution “with contempt,” and “already acts as if the Constitution were just for show.”
Card believes that Michelle Obama will be the next president, and Obama will install her by force. Slate’s Dave Weigel put the pieces of Card’s delusions — which he calls “a fun theory” — into place.
Quoting Card, Weigel writes:
“Like Hitler and the Iranian dictators,” Obama has announced his plan for a “powerful domestic army to terrify any opposition that might arise.”
According to Card, “Obama called for a ‘national police force’ in 2008, though he never gave a clue about why such a thing would be necessary.”
Weigel adds:
This is a revealing bit of craziness, and one you occasionally hear from members of Congress. Obama never called for a “national police force.” In a July 2008 speech he used the words“civilian national security force” to describe how he’d “expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots,” “double the size of the Peace Corps,” and “grow our foreign service.” That was five years ago, and he actually failed to do it.
Then Weigel 0ffers this direct quote from a May op-ed by Orson Scott Card:
Where will he get his “national police”? The NaPo will be recruited from “young out-of-work urban men” and it will be hailed as a cure for the economic malaise of the inner cities.
In other words, Obama will put a thin veneer of training and military structure on urban gangs, and send them out to channel their violence against Obama’s enemies.
Instead of doing drive-by shootings in their own neighborhoods, these young thugs will do beatings and murders of people “trying to escape” — people who all seem to be leaders and members of groups that oppose Obama.
Card begins this racist rant with this line:
This is the column where I predict how American democracy ends.
To be clear, this is from the mind of Orson Scott Card, a man the National Organization For Marriage felt deserved to be on their board of directors, and someone who would represent them well.
One last note. I’d be remiss to not take strong issue with Weigel’s characterization of Card and his anti-gay actions:
Card’s religious objection to gay marriage is shared by a substantial minority of Americans, and holding it against him is a little pat.
No, it’s not “a little pat.” Oppose equality for same-sex couples? That’s your business. Feel free. Try to stop me from being allowed to marry my husband, by pouring millions of dollars into anti-gay campaigns that lie about LGBT people and same-sex marriage? That’s my business, and there’s a strong line between Card’s and NOM’s anti-gay religious beliefs and my civil rights. And in America, my civil rights trump their religious beliefs. If they don’t, then that’s “how American democracy ends”
