DOJ’s Stance On DOMA Angers Gay Community
The gay community and its supporters are aghast at reports that the Obama Department of Justice not only is defending the Defense Of Marriage Act, which he promised during the campaign to repeal, but is “invoking incest and marrying children” as ways to explain its position. The media is accusing the DOJ of then lying to protect itself from the reason why it has taken the position it did.
People are starting to use the “P” word in relation to the DOJ’s position. This is wrong and only works against us. Pedophilia is the last word anyone needs to use in relation to gay issues. The Right has thrown it at us for decades (probably centuries, who knows) and we need to be responsible. Angry, active, but responsible. It’s bad enough when we accuse the Right of invoking pedophilia against us, it’s self-defeating and hypocritical for us to do the same.
That said, it’s time for us to stop questioning Obama and start accusing him. There’s currently a poll just to the left of this post. It asks, “Is President Obama doing enough and keeping his promises to the gay community?” I put it up a week or two ago. If you don’t want to know what it says until you vote, do so now! Right now, here are the results: Yes, 4%. No, 50%. Backtracking, 24%. He will when he can, 22%. Those numbers have been pretty consistent since the start. I can only assume they will change, and not in his favor, after today.
The Washington Blade has gotten heavily into the issue. In a piece titled, “You’ve been had,” they quote a few well-known Twitterers, including,
@wonderwillow: Obama’s position on DOMA kind of makes me want to throw up a little
and
@lesbiandad: My 5 stages of grief over Obama’s DOMA backstabbing: denial > anger > bargaining > anger > ANGER.
But their editorial cartoon is, sadly, perfect.
Some are saying, “Give him time.” A few are saying, “He had to defend the law.” Overall, the most of the responses across the Internet fall into the “Obama lied” or “Obama failed us” category.
