NYC Cancels ING Marathon After Starting Point Staten Island Residents Express Fury

For the first time ever, New York City is canceling the ING Marathon, after its traditional starting point, Staten Island, remains decimated by Hurricane Sandy, which killed at least 40 NYC residents.

The marathon averages about 45, 000 runners and brings an exponential of supporters into New York City’s five boroughs — along with millions upon millions of dollars.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly made the announcement just moments ago.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg told the press, “We would not want a cloud to hang over the race or its participants, and so we have decided to cancel it,” and added, “it is clear that [the Marathon] has become the source of controversy and division,” acording to ABC News’ Steven Portnoy.
