NY Same-Sex Marriage: NOM’s $2 Million Fight Consists Of Postcards

NOM, the National Organization for Marriage, promised to spend $1.5 million fighting the passage of same-sex marriage equality in New York, then changed that to a promise to spend $2 million, then changed that to a promise to raise $2 million, once they saw they could make more money claiming to try to defeat the almost sure-thing that became a law signed by New York Governor Cuomo. When all was said and done, NOM reportedly spent a mere $500,000 in NY, knowing once marriage equality was the law they could rake in more cash by claiming they can repeal it. Now, Maggie Gallagher and Brian Borwn’s NOM’s latest salvo in the war to defeat the Republican senators (“turncoats”) who voted for civil rights and equality consists of nasty postcards — which are merely fundraising tools — to the constituents of four Republican senators and three targeted Democrats (why only three?) who voted for marriage equality, which passed in the Senate by a 33-29 margin.

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) today began making good on its pledge to spend at least $2 million leading to the defeat of the seven state Senators who were responsible for the imposition of same-sex marriage in New York. NOM announced today it was spending $150,000 on issue mailings into the districts of Republican Senators Mark Grisanti, Roy McDonald, James Alesi and Stephen Saland, and Democratic Senators Shirley Huntley, Joseph Addabbo and Carl Kruger.

“This is the first step in what will be a sustained, determined effort to make sure the constituents of these cowardly Senators know what they have done,” said Brian Brown, NOM’s president. “They decided to ignore principle and their constituents in a calculated political flip-flop only after Governor Cuomo raised $1 million from Wall Street billionaires and hedge fund managers to support the legislation. Now, some of these same Senators are raising tens of thousands of dollars in campaign cash from gay marriage activists all around the country. It’s despicable.”

“It is shameful that these state Senators flip-flopped on such a critical issue when they saw gay marriage backers raising millions from Wall Street,” Brown said. “It is the people on Main Street who should be able to vote on this issue, not billionaires on Wall Street. We will not rest until the people of New York have the right to vote on marriage just as voters in 31 other states have been able to do.”

For the record, civil rights are inalienable. In the history of the America, the people have never had the right to vote on marriage. There is no constitutional stipulation, right, or requirement to enable citizens to vote on marriage equality.

One of the postcards, ironically, uses an image of a woman with tape across her mouth, reminiscent of the NoH8 campaign, “a photographic silent protest created by celebrity photographer Adam Bouska and partner Jeff Parshley in direct response to the passage of Proposition 8. Photos feature subjects with duct tape over their mouths, symbolizing their voices being silenced by Prop 8 and similar legislation around the world…”
