NY Gay Marriage Vote Today! Or, Um, Not…

Time To Call Your Senator!

Governor Paterson has been calling for a vote by the New York Senate on the gay marriage bill. Everybody says it’s going to be today!

HRC, Courage Campaign, Empire State Pride Agenda, and just about every media outlet says today, some time after noon. (You can watch the New York State Senate do whatever the heck it is they do, online, here. Watch them. Someone needs to.)

But Elizabeth Benjamin at the New York Daily News wrote this morning a list of all the reasons why the vote will not happen today. Here are two:

“As many as half a dozen Republicans were at one time or another considered gettable. As of yesterday, advocates felt they needed three GOP votes, but key senators were balking, saying they couldn’t go back to the district and tell constituents they had voted in favor of gay marriage but didn’t get a deficit reduction deal.”

and

‘The issue of last Tuesday’s Election Day results – from the GOP losses in local races to NY-23 to the Maine referendum – also has spooked some Republicans and marginal Democrats who might have once been movable.”

So, regardless of whether or not the vote happens today, what’s important is that we build momentum and show support. Contact your Senators and tell them you want and deserve full equality, starting with marriage.

Here’s a list of folks who will help you call or email your Senator. Do it now. Please.
