NOM’s ‘Summer For Marriage Tour’ Is Just A Couple Of Old White People…
… Just Like The Tea Party!
Amazing!
The National Organization For Marriage kicked off its bigotry hate fest bus tour, “Summer For Marriage,” which “will crisscross the east coast, mid-west and southern states holding a series of 20 rallies encouraging supporters to stand up for marriage. Starting July 14th, the month-long tour will stop in key battleground areas of the marriage debate, educating local communities on why marriage between one man and one woman should be defended and preserved in our nation.â€
Right…
Their first stop, Augusta, Maine, was a huge success. If you call a whopping 50 people showing up a “huge success.”But NOM actually called it a “huge success.” (“Augusta Rally a Huge Success – Thank You!“) They had one sign: “Marriage: One Man. One Woman.” I’d show you the proof but NOM has copyrighted their Flickr photos and I’m sure would love to sue me, so you’ll have to head over to Flickr to see it. (They call this a rally?)
Then they headed to Manchester, Vermont. Huge success! (Hahaha!) I was going to say, I think 75 folks showed, including the kids they dragged along. this time, lots more signs, maybe a dozen.
But then I read the signs! Turns out, 11 out of the 12 signholders at the rally were marriage equality supporters! The signs read, “Support God’s Hate,” “NH = Equality,” and “Marriage For ALL.”(Again, head over to Flickr to see the photo!)
So, they had maybe, maybe 50 folks there, and a dozen plus protesting the anti-marriage equality bigots.
I guess in a state that approved same-sex marriage, those 75 50 traditional marriage activists must have thought they really needed to make signs, like, had ONE sign: “Happy Families Start With (stick figure drawing of one man, one woman) – Want diversity? Have more kids!”
Brilliant!
Again, the entire crowd was old white people and the few kids they dragged along (gotta teach that bigotry early!)
On their “Summer For Marriage” blog, they write,
“Here in Manchester, noting opposition protesters in the back of the rally holding signs about “hate,†Brian Brown said that we have ALWAYS stood for respect for the dignity of ALL people. Notes that civil rights activists in the African American community are sick and tired of opposition attempts to hijack the legacy of that movement.”
“we have ALWAYS stood for respect for the dignity of ALL people.” R e a l l y???
(Anyone who feels NOM, Maggie, or Brian has treated them with “dignity,” raise your hand!)
And get this: Brian actually said, “civil rights activists in the African American community are sick and tired of opposition attempts to hijack the legacy of that movement.”
Interesting…
Because, BRIAN, back in May, on NOM’s blog, you wrote this:
Outside the courtroom of the D.C. Court of Appeals, we pro-marriage forces rallied under the leadership of Bishop Harry Jackson. “This is the new civil rights movement!” I told a crowd of 250 enthusiastically cheering marriage champions!
So, Brian, who is “hijacking the legacy of that movement?” Why, YOU!
(My position, as is the position of many, including African-Americans like Senator Nia Gill, is that marriage equality is a civil rights issue:
“It is a civil rights issue – not because African-Americans own the copyright to civil rights, it is a civil rights issue in the analysis of the equal protection of the fourteenth amendment in the constitution. And maybe some in my community want to hold on to it, because it’s ours. Because our blood has been shed for the right to vote, and we jealously guard that as a re-affirmation of being American. And so we hold it, because no one can do civil rights and have civil rights better than we do. That’s emotional, but it is certainly not an analysis of the constitutional imperatives that face us. It’s a civil rights issue.”
For some reason, the NOM “Summer For (Straight) Marriage” tour is taking today off, but they’ll be in Albany Saturday.
Now, I’ll leave you with this thought: What other radical right wing group is a bunch of old white people?
