NOM Chairman To Testify In GOP-Led House IRS Hearing

A Congressional committee on Tuesday will hear testimony from heads of six conservative groups, including John top,) Chairman of NOM, the National Organization For Marriage. NOM claims the IRS leaked their tax returns — a statement seemingly contradicted by Eastman’s predecessor, former NOM Chair and co-founder Maggie Gallagher.

GOP Congressman Dave Camp of Michigan, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, “announced that the Committee will hold a hearing featuring organizations targeted by the Internal Revenue Service (“IRS”) based on their personal beliefs,” an announcement on the House website notes:

“While we now know that the IRS began targeting individuals based on their personal beliefs three years ago, we still need to know who began this targeting and why, and we need to understand how individuals were affected by the IRS’s abuse. This hearing will provide a voice to those Americans who wound up under the IRS’s political microscope on the basis of their beliefs.”

While the announcement states the “hearing will focus on organizations that were targeted as part of the Internal Revenue Service’s practice of discriminating against applicants for tax-exempt status based on their personal beliefs,” NOM was not discriminated against for tax-exempt status — their claims is the IRS “leaked” their tax returns, which the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) and the Huffington Post later published.

In fact, as The New Civil Rights Movement reported recently, Maggie Gallagher herself disputed that allegation, when she wrote at the National Review last month:

“You may recall that a low-level employee also released NOM’s private tax-return information to a guy claiming to be a NOM employee, who then posted it on the Internet.”

That’s not a leak, that’s a scam, or perhaps fraud, but it’s not a leak.

You tax dollars at work — in two way. First, you tax dollars are paying, in part, for NOM’s work, as some of their activities operate as a tax-exempt entity. Second, you tax dollars will be paying for tomorrow’s sham hearing.

Speaker of the House John Boehner last year appointed NOM co-founder Robert P. George to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). Commissioners at the USCIRF are government employees, and hold their posts for two years.
