NJ: Threatening Veto Christie Says Gay Marriage Bill “An Act Of Theater”

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie this afternoon said yesterday’s successful passage of a same-sex marriage bill in the Senate was a “good bunch of theater,” and again threatened a veto should the Assembly Thursday also pass a same-sex marriage equality bill, which is all but assured.

Christie, speaking to reporters at a noon press conference, also claimed there were “not enough votes to override in either chamber” of the NJ Legislature, and promised “good swift action” on his part in vetoing a gay marriage bill should it come to his desk. He also called the New Jersey Assembly and Senate’s attempts to offer the civil right of marriage “a good bunch of theater,” adding if they cannot override his veto it will be “an awful embarrassment” for New Jersey lawmakers who voted for marriage equality.

Asked why lawmakers who previously had voted against marriage equality bills in the past changed their votes, Christie said he didn’t know their reasons, but “maybe their arms got twisted a little bit harder.”
