New Senator Replacing DeMint Wanted To Impeach Obama

Rep. Tim Scott has reportedly been chosen by South Carolina Republican Governor Nikki Haley to replace U.S. Senator Jim DeMint, who resigned earlier  this month to take a million-dollar salary as head of the Heritage Foundation. U.S. Congressman Scott is a Tea Party Republican who last year wanted to impeach President Obama over the debt ceiling fight. Scott is anti-gay, anti-union, anti-women, wants to violate the First Amendment in favor of the Ten Commandments, successfully battled to reduce HIV/AIDS funding, wants to revoke food stamps for entire families if any member goes on strike, and opposed the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. He opposes same-sex marriage and ENDA.

Scott Keyes and Greg Noth at Think Progress put together an excellent overview of some of Scott’s positions. An excerpt:

• Floated impeaching Obama over the debt ceiling. As the debt ceiling debate raged in the summer of 2011 because of the intransigence of Tea Party freshmen like Scott, the nation inched perilously close to defaulting on its obligations. One option discussed by some officials to avoid that scenario was for the president to assert that the debt ceiling itself was an unconstitutional infringement on the 14th Amendment. However, Tim Scott told a South Carolina Tea Party group that if Obama were to go this route, it would be an “impeachable act.”
• Proposed a bill to cut off food stamps for entire families if one member went on strike. 
• Wanted to spend an unlimited amount of money to display Ten Commandments outside county building. When he was sued for violating the Constitution and a Circuit Judge’s orders, Scott was nonplussed: “Whatever it costs in the pursuit of this goal (of displaying the Commandments) is worth it.”
• Defended fairness of giving billions in subsidies to Big Oil.
• Helped slash South Carolina’s HIV/AIDS budget. As a state representative, Scott backed a proposal to cut the state’s entire HIV/AIDS budget, despite the fact that South Carolina ranks in the top-third of reported AIDS cases. The cuts were ultimately included in the state’s budget, impacting more than 2,000 HIV-positive South Carolinians who needed help paying for their medication.

Scott’s top contributor is the Club for Growth, a radical, extreme right wing conservative anti-tax group.

Scott will not be a vote for gun control.

“A proud member of the NRA, Tim supports the right of law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms, and to defend themselves, their family and their property,” Scott’s 2010 website stated, according to On The Issues. “Tim will protect our Second Amendment rights, which he believes is a fundamental freedom and a cornerstone of our democracy.”

I am unapologetically pro-life.  Each and every human life is valuable and my legislative agenda and record reflect my resolute commitment to protect the sanctity of life.

I support traditional marriage.  The institution of marriage is the unity of one man and one woman.   Allowing the government to weaken the definition of marriage takes away from our children and we must not allow that to happen.

I will fight for religious freedoms.  The Constitution expressly safeguards our freedom to practice and embrace religion.  The federal government’s role is not to protect government from religion, but to protect religion from government intrusion.  Government is already interfering in our homes and businesses; we must not allow it to do the same with our faith.

Scott would be the only African-American in the Senate.
