MSNBC’s Pat Buchanan’s Long History Of Homophobia, Racism, And Bigotry

Pat Buchanan has a long, long history of homophobia, anti-semitism, Holocaust diminution, racism, and bigotry, yet continues to play a role on the conservative stage — and on progressive, liberal television. Buchanan’s latest column, in which he says Norway shooter and mass-murderer Anders Behring Breivik “may be right,” has fueled outrage from all corners of the political spectrum.

Buchanan is a paleoconservative MSNBC analyst whose failed 1992 Republican presidential campaign against incumbent George H. W. Bush led to a keynote and historic culture war speech at the GOP convention, in which he outlined “a religious war going on in our country for the soul of America.”

After presidential candidate Barack Obama’s 2008 speech on race, Buchanan offered this:

“America has been the best country on earth for black folks. It was here that 600,000 black people, brought from Africa in slave ships, grew into a community of 40 million, were introduced to Christian salvation, and reached the greatest levels of freedom and prosperity blacks have ever known.”

And Buchanan has the dubious distinction as being named one of the reasons famous formerly-conservative blogger Charles Johnson, of Little Green Footballs, converted in 2009. On his list of ten reasons why he parted ways with the Right, Johnson says, is,

“2. Support for bigotry, hatred, and white supremacism (see: Pat Buchanan, Ann Coulter, Robert Stacy McCain, Lew Rockwell, etc.)”

Now, a new 21-page exposé published today ago from Media Matters details Buchanan’s hatred, wrapped in the American flag. Here are a few examples.

HOMOPHOBIA

At the onset of AIDS, when it seemed mostly a gay malady, some right-wingers could barely contain their glee. Columnist Pat Buchanan wrote in 1983: ”The poor homosexuals — they have declared war upon nature, and now nature is extracting an awful retribution.”

Jake Tapper reported of Buchanan: “In 1990, Buchanan spewed out another hate-filled sound bite: ‘With 80,000 dead of AIDS, 3,000 more buried each month, our promiscuous homosexuals appear literally hell-bent on Satanism and suicide.'”

“What is the moral basis of the argument that homosexuality is normal, natural and healthy? In recent years, it has been associated with high levels of AIDS and enteric diseases, and from obits in gay newspapers, early death. Where is the successful society where homosexual marriage was normal?”

RACISM

Buchanan “Condemned Critics Of The Sharpeville Massacre In South Africa, Where 67 Blacks Were Gunned Down By White Police.” Buchanan also made reference to Soviet poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko as “the house nigger of the Politburo.”

Immigration Will Turn U.S. Into “A Polyglot Boarding House For The World, A Tangle Of Squabbling Minorities.”

Buchanan Wrote Foreword To Book Compiling Works Of A White Supremacist.

ANTI-SEMITISM

Buchanan: Hitler “Was Also An Individual Of Great Courage,” and “Was World War II Worth It? … Why Destroy Hitler?”
