Minnesota Governor “Vetoes” Anti-Gay Marriage Amendment (Letter)
Minnesota Democratic Governor Mark Dayton, in a symbolic gesture Wednesday morning, “vetoed” a proposed amendment to his state’s constitution that would ban same-sex marriage. The referendum will be put before Minnesota voters in 2012, and will seek to write anti-gay discrimination directly into the state constitution.
In Minnesota, the Governor cannot actually veto a proposed constitutional amendment. Only the state’s voters can.
The Governor called the proposed amendment “divisive and destructive,” and “un-Minnesotan and un-American.”
