Michelle Obama: Kagan And Sotomayor Will Protect Right To “Love Whomever We Choose”
First Lady Michelle Obama spoke at two Democratic fundraisers earlier this week and told audiences that her husband’s two Supreme Court appointees, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor will protect the right to “love whomever we choose.†Mrs. Obama also said the two Associate Justices would protect the right to privacy, apparently in relation to abortion, which the Supreme Court declared legal, in Roe v. Wade, in 1973.
“And let us not forget what it meant when my husband appointed two brilliant Supreme Court justices — and for the first time in history, our daughters and sons watched three women take their seats on our nation’s highest court,” Mrs. Obama said on Tuesday at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel
in Detroit, Michigan. “But, more importantly, let us not forget the impact of their decisions, the impact that will have on our lives for decades to come — on our privacy and security, on whether we can speak freely, worship openly, and love whomever we choose. That is what is at stake here.”
“And let us not forget how, because we finally ended “don’t ask, don’t tell,” our troops will never again have to lie about who they love to serve the country they love. And how we finally brought to justice the man behind the 9/11 attacks and so many other horrific acts.”
“And let’s talk about health care for a minute. Last year, we made history together by finally passing health reform. But now, there are folks out there talking about repealing this reform.”
“So today, we have to ask ourselves, is this who we are? Will we let them succeed?”
“Is this what we want? Will we let insurance companies deny us coverage because we have preexisting conditions like breast cancer or diabetes? Or will we stand up and say that in this country, we don’t let our fellow citizens go bankrupt because they got sick? Not here in America.
“Will we let insurance companies refuse to cover basic preventive care — things like cancer screenings and prenatal care that save money, but more importantly, save lives? Or will we stand up for our lives — and for the lives of the people that we love? That is what’s at stake here. That is the choice in this election.”
