Michele Bachmann: Fighting Same-Sex Marriage Like Fighting Pearl Harbor

In 2004, Michele Bachmann catapulted her career on the backs of the gay community. As a state Senator, her sponsorship of an ultimately-failed attempt to write a ban on same-sex marriage directly into the Minnesota state constitution established her base and led her to win a seat in the U.S. Congress. Comments, though, like this one comparing gay marriage to Pearl Harbor were especially pernicious.

Bachmann’s record — along with that of her husband — are becoming clearer day by day. Comments like, “It’s part of Satan I think to say that this is “gay.” It’s anything but gay,” or, “If you’re involved in the gay and lesbian lifestyle, it’s bondage. It is personal bondage, personal despair and personal enslavement,” were just par for the course for the addled Senator.

Jeremy Hooper at Good As You (someone you should read consistently!) unearthed this circa-2004 email from Michele Bachmann, a “One Man, One Woman Marriage Update.” In it, she writes about an “unheeded” message that was sent just before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

“You are a type of Orville Ethier — a patriot looking to secure American freedoms. The question is, will the Senators of Minnesota act like the Honolulu military headquarters and ignore your message? Today we face perhaps the greatest attack on the family in our lifetime.  Now is OUR time to stand up and send a message to avert and equally impending disaster.”

Frightening, the depths to which Michele Bachmann will go.
