Men: Liberal? Atheist? Monogamous? You Probably Are Smarter, Too.
CNN reports today of a study that finds that men who are liberal, atheist, and sexually exclusive stand to have a higher IQ than those who are conservative, religious, and prone to multiple sexual partners.
“Liberalism, atheism, male sexual exclusivity linked to IQ” offers the usual caution of not using these findings to “stereotype or make assumptions about people,” but does make one wonder.
“The reasoning is that sexual exclusivity in men, liberalism and atheism all go against what would be expected given humans’ evolutionary past. In other words, none of these traits would have benefited our early human ancestors, but higher intelligence may be associated with them.
“The adoption of some evolutionarily novel ideas makes some sense in terms of moving the species forward,” said George Washington University leadership professor James Bailey, who was not involved in the study. “It also makes perfect sense that more intelligent people — people with, sort of, more intellectual firepower — are likely to be the ones to do that.”
“Religion, the current theory goes, did not help people survive or reproduce necessarily, but goes along the lines of helping people to be paranoid, Kanazawa said. Assuming that, for example, a noise in the distance is a signal of a threat helped early humans to prepare in case of danger.
“It helps life to be paranoid, and because humans are paranoid, they become more religious, and they see the hands of God everywhere,” Kanazawa said.”
I suppose this is another example of why the conservative movement in America recently has been anti-education and anti-intelligence.
Remember last weekend’s open forum? I wonder what “Molotov” Mitchell would have to say about this? I wonder how it would play in the halls of CPAC, where “Real Men Marry Women“?
But I especially would love to see Tucker Carlson and Fox News anchor Clayton Morris do a follow up to this:
Carlson: “College students are more liberal… on certain social issues, gay marriage, abortion, capitalism… College students become more liberal after four years of college — we know that.â€
Morris: “And so, what is the answer, how do we fix this, if degrees are making graduates more likely to support same-sex marriage, abortion… How do you fix this?â€
I imagine it would go something like this:
Carlson: “Men who are liberal… on certain social issues, gay marriage, abortion, capitalism… Men who are atheists, men who are monogamous, have a higher IQ — now we know that.â€
Morris: “And so, what is the answer, how do we fix this, if men who are liberal, atheist, and monogamous are smarter, how do you fix this?â€
