Time Warner Cable, which operates in 28 states, last month ran ads in New York State from the National Organization for Marriage advocating against same-sex marriage equality. Many were outraged to see this bigotry invade their homes. One man has decided to do something about it. Today, Jeffrey Marx has deemed to be Time Warner Cable Cancel Day, and he invites all Time Warner subscribers to cancel their Time Warner service.
Time Warner Cable has a passionate group of subscribers. Many, yours truly included, passionately despise the poor service they feel they receive. But it’s not the poor service, but the poor choice to accept an anti-gay ad, and the poor response Marx received that convinced him to take on the media giant.
“On Wednesday, June 1st 2011, I am canceling my service with Time Warner and switching to another provider,” Marx writes via Facebook. “I ask you to do the same, even if you are not a customer in NY. Let’s make a national gesture that there is no room for intolerance. Spread the word to your friends and family, then spread the word to Time Warner. Make sure to give a reason when canceling your service, something along the lines of “Due to Time Warner’s support of discrimination towards the LGBT community, I will no longer give my money to them.” Simple and to the point.”
“New York state is the next state poised to get full Equality. The fight for our rights has landed here in our laps and it’s time to speak up and against anyone who doesn’t support civil rights. Time Warner Cable has accepted anti-gay dollars to run anti-gay commercials on my favorite news channel – NY1.”
