Majority Of Americans — But Not Republicans — Support Rights Of Gays To Adopt

A new Gallup poll finds that overall, the majority of Americans support the right of gays and lesbians to adopt children, but the majority of Republicans do not. 61 percent of all Americans support adoption rights for gays and lesbians, including 75 percent of Democrats and 61 percent of Independents, but only 46 percent of Republicans do.

The results are for the question, “Do you think there should or should not be [a]doption rights for gays and lesbians so they can legally adopt children?”

But the questions, and answers, mask a broader issue: same-sex couples are often not allowed to adopt jointly.

NCRM writer Jean Ann Esselink has written several stories on great same-sex couples who have been prevented from adopting jointly, like the amazing story of Jayne Rowse and April DeBoer.
