Listen: Chris Kluwe’s Pro-Gay Marriage Equality ‘Lustful Cockmonster’ Ad
Chris Kluwe, the Minnesota Vikings punter and pro-gay marriage equality advocate who coined the term “lustful cockmonster,” has enshrined the phrase into an ad for Minnesotans For Equality, in hopes that Minnesota won’t enshrine anti-gay hate into their constitution on election day, when the state will decide if they want to ban same-sex marriage equality.
Kluwe responded to the virulently anti-gay Maryland lawmaker who had tried to use his office to silence Kluwe’s fellow NFL player’s support of same-sex marriage with the “lustful cockmonster,” phrase, to wide acclaim.
“I can assure you that gay people getting married will have zero effect on your life. They won’t come into your house and steal your children. They won’t magically turn you into a lustful cockmonster,” Kluwe’s iconic letter reads:
“They won’t even overthrow the government in an orgy of hedonistic debauchery because all of a sudden they have the same legal rights as the other 90 percent of our population—rights like Social Security benefits, child care tax credits, Family and Medical Leave to take care of loved ones, and COBRA healthcare for spouses and children. You know what having these rights will make gays? Full-fledged American citizens just like everyone else, with the freedom to pursue happiness and all that entails.”
The radio ad is amusing, and bleeps out the “cockmonster” parts, kind of…
“I like the new ad because if sends a funny yet pointed message about the dangers of letting government dictate our personal life,†said Kluwe, according to Jim Buzinski at OutSports, who first broke the story.
Buzinski adds:
While use of a vulgarity might turn off some voters, my hunch is that they are anti-same sex marriage anyway. This ad can break through the clutter and compliments more traditional ads by other groups opposed to the amendment. With a limited ad budget, any free media will only spread Kluwe’s message.
