Less Than One Month After Gay Teen’s Brutal Murder, Killer Found “Mentally Incompetent.”

Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado’s Killer To Remain Under Observation

On November 13, you’ll remember, Jorge Steven Lopez Mercado was murdered, his body decapitated, dismembered, and burned in Puerto Rico. His confessed killer, Juan Martinez Matos, Wednesday underwent a psychiatric evaluation. Via Towleroad, yesterday:

“Yesterday I received an email from Christopher Pagan, who … was present at the court appearance.

[Christopher’s email:]

“…the psychological evaluation that was performed on Juan was in the total amount of thirty minutes. That he was noted to have anxiety, flashbacks, nightmares, and was unable to remember the events of that gruesome night, when he beat, burned, decapitated and dismembered Jorge.

“He was deemed as incapacitated to speak and take part in the pre trial and was to be sent later to the Psychiatric Ward of Puerto Rico, where he would then be evaluated again on January 7, 2009, and he is to remain there until that date.”

Today, Joe. My God. asks, “is he faking it?” (He links to this piece that is worth a read.)

I would simply ask, how long would an accurate psychiatric evaluation take, and how long would it take to assess the findings? And why did the Governor of Puerto Rico never label this gruesome, hateful murder a hate crime?
