Irony 2012: GOP Convention Held In Taxpayer-Funded Stadium

The GOP’s 2012 convention theme will be, “We Did Build This!” — which is amusing since the Republican National Committee convention will actually be held at the Tampa Bay Times Forum, which is publicly-owned and is managed with taxpayer funds. The media center for the RNC Convention is the Tampa Convention Center, which is also publicly-owned, and was built with $140 million in taxpayer funds.

Thousands of GOP convention delegates will make their way to the city of Tampa, in the state of Florida, in airplanes and cars and buses tested and regulated by government agencies, on roads and runways built and maintained and regulated by government, and they’ll communicate, often via the Internet — created thanks to government.

While at the government-owned Tampa Bay Times Forum, all delegates and visitors will have to check their guns as there are no weapons allowed in the convention center. They’ll have to exit the building in order to smoke. And they’ll have to recycle their plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and programs.

Of course, if “We Did Build This!” is referring to the 2012 RNC political platform, the most conservative in history, then, go ahead, feel free to own it.
