Remember Betty Crocker? I do.
When I was a child many, many years ago, my sister and I had the Betty Crocker’s New Boys and Girls Cookbook, which, as you can see below, for being published in 1965, was pretty progressive even then. Of course, the famous cook today makes scores of delicious cake and brownie mixes. No wonder she was named  the second most popular American woman by Fortune in 1945.
Human rights hero Eleanor Roosevelt was number one.
Thursday, August 1 marks the date the state’s first same-sex weddings can be performed, after the legislature passed marriage equality into law earlier this year.
“Betty Crocker brand manager Laura Forero said the image of ‘Betty’ is constantly evolving, but diversity and inclusion are in the brand’s DNA,” Minnesota Public Radio (MPR) reports:
“Celebrating these three families today, seemed very appropriate as Betty celebrates all families,” Forero said.
MPR adds that General Mills “took a high-profile stance last year against a proposed constitutional amendment that would have made marriage only between a man and a woman, a provision already in state law.”
The company’s decision sparked a “Dump General Mills” boycott organized by the National Organization for Marriage.
And indeed it has. Of course, the National Organization For Marriage (NOM) boycott failed tremendously, with the good folks at General Mills last year winning the culture war after they came out to the few dozen protestors standing outside their gates, and offering them refreshments.
But NOM, smelling the wafting of flour and sugar and cash in the air, and thus an opportunity to fundraise, no doubt, has put the handle in the Model A (for asinine) engine and is trying to ratchet up more anti-GM (General Mills) animus over the Betty Crocker wedding cake catastrophe.
Pointing to a Breitbart News article (take the words “news” and “article” with the necessary grain of salt,) NOM writes:
“General Mills is pushing its marriage redefinition agenda even further, this time using a fictional character to assist. General Mills’ culinary ‘spokeswoman’ Betty Crocker decided to take time away from her baking to weigh in on the marriage debate in Minnesota.”
NOM also posted a link to this video, which only serves to denigrate NOM’s message, but hey, they’re amateurs.
