HRC Head Solmonese Puts On His Obama 2012 Co-Chair Hat To Deflect Marriage Debate

Please, Sir, May I Have Some S’Mores?

Unsurprisingly, outgoing Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese today put on his Obama 2012 Co-Chair hat and ran defense for the President after Vice President Joe Biden came out in support of same-sex marriage equality (or, equal rights for married same-sex couples, depending on your reading of his words) on Meet The Press yesterday. Solmonese, in this video, clearly is on a tightrope, balancing between wanting to do his job in supporting the President’s re-election as one of 35 national co-chairs for the committee to re-elect Obama, and doing his job as head of HRC, holding Obama’s feet to the fire — something he’s never done especially well to begin with.

Trying to turn the focus from the Vice President’s remarks to the oh-so-stark difference between Obama and Romney is a smart move on Solmonese’s part. A smarter move would be for Obama to just come out for marriage equality. Imagine if he had done that ahead of North Carolina’s Amendment One debate?…

Remember, Solmonese ensured that HRC endorsed the Obama re-election bid one year ago this month and almost 18 months before election day.

Put it this way: when Solmonese holds Obama’s feet to the fire, the heat isn’t high enough to roast marshmallows.
